Canadian Environmental Network Funding Has Been Cut- PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!

We’ve received some bad news yesterday evening that the Federal Government has decided to terminate its funding agreement with the Canadian Environment Network (CEN), which is a major supporter of the Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides-NL.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Network (NLEN), like the all the other provincial environment networks across the country, receives a small core operating grant (~$18,000 annually) to run our part-time office. Yesterday’s decision means that this source of funding for the NLEN will cease. We will of course be calling for a reversal on this decision, while also seeking alternate sources of funding for the fiscal year 2012 and beyond.

If you have connections with the MPs in your ridings and feel that they could lend support to the CEN / NLEN, I encourage you to make contact with them. The sample letter to MPs (also attached) can serve as a starting point.

The Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides- Newfoundland and Labrador (CAP-NL) hopes you will support a province wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use in Newfoundland and Labrador. Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Nova Scotia and dozens of municipalities in Canada have banned lawn care pesticides but our provincial government still permits their sale and use. Known to cause childhood cancers, reproductive and neurological problems and fatalities in pets, pesticides pose a risk to health that far outweighs the look of a nice lawn. Even if you do not use pesticides, your neighbour or landlord may be doing so and the government of Newfoundland and Labrador requires that only residents in a 15 meter radius be notified when spraying will occur! There are many organic lawn care methods that are easy to implement and do not involve large amounts of chemicals entering the air and water. Please stay tuned to sign a petition that will be delivered to Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and to find out about a public forum you can attend in St. John’s.
